Default Banco Chinchorro - MEXICO

Hello All,

Allison and I are currently traveling in the Yucatan Peninsula... we came to visit my parents, but we are also taking the opportunity to see and photograph wild corals and fish of the Mexican Caribbean sea.

Below are photos and videos of the Banco Chinchorro Atoll. This atoll is located about 1 hour away (boat ride) from mainland. It is one the best preserved reefs in the Mesoamerican barrier. We saw that even there corals are having a hard time... however, even now ... the reef is a breath-taker.

We need help to identify the organisms in the photos.

Cheers!

Looks like a great dive! I see a lot of larger / older corals and sponges; is it the small stuff that is having a hard time taking hold? I love the green wolf eel. Wish I was there !! All the best for you and Allison in 2009 !!!

Hello ksaltt,

I just realize that I took most of my photos framing nice corals... and leaving the dead stuff out. I'll see if I took some photos of the overall (dead) parts. But my feeling is that about 70% of hard corals are caput... sponges and soft / fan corals are doing just fine. Unfortunately the hard corals (i.e. the ones that are having a hard time) are the important reef builders.

I will upload more photos/videos of other sites that we saw in the last few days...

Cheers!
